Terms of Use
Version 2026-04-16
These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your use of the OpenScripture application and website (“Service”), operated by Paul Robson trading as OpenScripture (ABN 50194020106) (“we,” “us,” “our”).
By accessing or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.
1. The Service
OpenScripture is a Bible reading and study application that displays biblical text across multiple translations, provides original-language study tools, and allows users to compare and personalise their reading experience.
2. Accounts
You may use the Service without creating an account. Certain features (including syncing preferences across devices, profile management, and premium features) require account registration.
When creating an account, you agree to provide accurate information and to keep your login credentials secure. You are responsible for all activity under your account. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at openscriptureapp@gmail.com.
You must be at least 13 years of age to create an account. If you are under 18, you represent that you have your parent or guardian's consent to use the Service.
2.1 Newsletter Consent
Marketing and newsletter emails are opt-in only. Signing in to OpenScripture does not by itself grant permission for newsletter emails. If you opt in, you may unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter email.
3. Free and Premium Tiers
The Service offers a free tier with core reading and study features, and a premium tier (“Scholar”) with additional features including advanced AI translation modes, Word Lock, unlimited comparison, multiple study profiles, and offline reading.
Premium subscriptions are billed monthly (A$7) or annually (A$77). All prices are in Australian dollars and are inclusive of GST where applicable. Prices may be adjusted with 30 days' notice to existing subscribers.
You may cancel your subscription at any time. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period; you will retain premium access until that date and your content created as a premium user is preserved for 30 days after the period ends (see Section 8). No refunds are provided for partial billing periods, except as required by Australian Consumer Law.
If you delete your account while holding an active annual subscription, we schedule the Stripe subscription to cancel at the end of the current billing period so you receive the access you paid for. If you delete a monthly subscription it is cancelled immediately.
4. Bible Translation Text
4.1 Public Domain Translations
Certain translations available in the Service (KJV, ASV, YLT, DRA, LXX-B) are in the public domain and may be freely read and copied.
4.2 Licensed Translations
Other translations are included under licence from their respective copyright holders. These translations remain the intellectual property of their publishers. You may read licensed translation text within the Service but may not copy, reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works of licensed translation text except as permitted by the applicable copyright holder's terms.
The following translations are included under specific licence agreements:
- NASB (New American Standard Bible) — Included under a Free Distribution Permission Agreement from The Lockman Foundation (effective April 13, 2026). The NASB is and will remain free to access for all users of this Service. New American Standard Bible - NASB 2020 Copyright © 1960, 1971, 1977, 1995, 2020 by The Lockman Foundation, La Habra, Calif. Used by permission. All rights reserved. For Permission to Quote Information visit www.Lockman.org.
Specific copyright notices for each translation are displayed within the Service and form part of these Terms.
4.3 AI-Generated Translations
The Service includes AI-generated translation text produced by OpenScripture's data pipeline. All AI-generated translations are © 2026 OpenScripture. All rights reserved. AI-generated translations are created from public domain source texts and are not affiliated with any Bible publisher.
You may read AI-generated translation text within the Service. You may not reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works of AI-generated translation text without our written permission.
If you share an AI-generated rendering for personal study or commentary purposes (within fair use), you must:
- Clearly attribute it to OpenScripture (© OpenScripture, openscripture.io);
- Identify it as an AI-generated translation, not as the work of any Bible publisher; and
- Not present it in a way that implies endorsement by any denomination, scholar, or publisher.
4.4 Composite Mode and Modified Text
Composite Mode allows you to combine verses from multiple translations and to apply word locks (Strong's-keyed substitutions) or custom verse-level translations. The resulting reading is personal and may differ word-for-word from any source translation.
When you copy or share verses from Composite Mode, you agree that:
- You will not represent modified text as if it were the unaltered text of the underlying translation. Modified verses must remain marked as user-modified — the Service appends an automatic caveat for this purpose, and you must not strip it.
- You will preserve all copyright notices the Service appends for every translation present in your selection. The notices are required by the licence agreements with the relevant publishers, including the Lockman Foundation Free Distribution Permission Agreement for the NASB.
- You will not redistribute selections in a way that implies any publisher endorses your modifications, or in a way that conflates user-modified wording with any specific translation.
Misattributing modified text to a translation publisher, or stripping the user-modification caveat before redistributing, is a material breach of these Terms and may also constitute a violation of the relevant licence agreement.
4.5 Fair Use and Quotations
Quotation of Bible text from the Service is permitted for personal study, sermon preparation, teaching, and non-commercial commentary, within the fair-use limits set by each publisher (typically a few hundred verses per work). When quoting, you must:
- Include the translation name and the copyright notice the Service displays for that translation;
- Not quote so extensively that your use substitutes for purchasing or licensing the translation; and
- Comply with any additional limits the publisher has placed on their text (these are listed in the in-app copyright notices).
5. User Content
“User Content” means any content you create within the Service, including notes, highlights, custom translation text, word locks, and profile information.
You retain ownership of your User Content. By using the Service, you grant us a limited licence to store, process, display, and back up your User Content solely for the purpose of providing the Service to you.
We do not use your User Content to train AI models, sell to third parties, or for any purpose other than providing and improving the Service.
You are responsible for ensuring your User Content does not infringe any third party's rights or violate applicable law.
6. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service to systematically download, scrape, mirror, cache for redistribution, or bulk-extract Bible translation text, commentary, study notes, or original-language data, by any means (manual, automated, browser extensions, screen recording, or otherwise)
- Export, redistribute, or republish translation text in a way that exceeds the fair-use limits set by the relevant publisher
- Strip, alter, or omit the copyright notices or user-modification caveats the Service appends to copied or shared text
- Attempt to circumvent premium tier restrictions or access controls
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Service, or attempt to extract the underlying data store
- Use the Service to distribute malware or conduct any illegal activity
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to our systems, accounts, or data
- Impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service's infrastructure
- Use automated tools, crawlers, scripts, or AI agents to access the Service except as expressly permitted in writing
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, and to report violations to the relevant translation copyright holders where their licence terms have been breached.
7. Intellectual Property

10. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability to you for any claims arising from or related to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you have paid us for the Service in the 12 months preceding the claim, or (b) AUD $90 (equivalent to approximately one year of the annual premium subscription). This cap applies to both free-tier and paid users.
We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of data, loss of profits, or loss of goodwill.
Nothing in this section limits your non-excludable rights under the Australian Consumer Law, as preserved by Section 9.
11. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, losses, or damages (including legal fees) arising from your use of the Service, your User Content, or your violation of these Terms.
12. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated Terms on the Service and updating the version identifier. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
For material changes affecting premium subscribers, we will provide at least 30 days' notice via email.
13. Termination
You may stop using the Service at any time. You may delete your account by contacting us at openscriptureapp@gmail.com.
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service if you violate these Terms, with or without notice depending on the severity of the violation.
Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases. We will retain your data for a reasonable period to allow you to export it, after which it may be deleted.
14. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Australia. Any disputes arising from these Terms will be resolved in the courts of New South Wales, Australia, subject to any applicable rights you may have to bring proceedings in your local jurisdiction under consumer protection laws.
