Matthew 6
“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ in front of people in order to be seen by them; if you do, then you have no reward stored up with your Father who is in heaven.
Therefore, when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets in order to be praised by people. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
so that your charitable giving is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will repay you.
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they like to pray while standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets in order to be seen by people. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go into your inner room, and after closing your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will repay you.
And when you are praying, do not keep repeating the same phrases, like the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words.
Therefore do not be like them, because your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
So pray in this way: ‘Our Father, who is in heaven, may your name be treated as holy.
May your kingdom come. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the Wicked One.’
“For if you forgive people their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive people their transgressions, your Father will not forgive your transgressions.
“Moreover, when you fast, do not be gloomy like the hypocrites, for they try to look miserable so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face
so that your fasting will not be obvious to people, but only to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will repay you.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust ruin them, and where thieves break in and steal,
but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not ruin them, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“The lamp of the body is the eye; therefore, if your eye is generous, your whole body will be full of light.
But if your eye is stingy, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!
“No one is able to serve two masters, because he will either hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and think little of the other. You are not able to serve God and Wealth.
Therefore I say to you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birds in the sky: they do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they are?
And which of you, by being anxious, is able to add one hour to his life?
And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they do not labor or spin,
yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of these.
But if God clothes the grass of the field in this way, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won’t he much more certainly provide for you, O you of little trust?
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘What will we wear?’
For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
Instead, seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.
Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, because tomorrow will be anxious about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
