Matthew 16
And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and in order to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
But he answered and said to them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, because the sky is red.’
And in the morning, ‘It will be bad weather today because the sky is red and becoming dark.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you are not able to interpret the signs of the times.
An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” And he left them, and departed.
And the disciples came to the other side of the lake, but they had forgotten to take bread.
And Jesus said to them, “Watch out, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
And they began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “We did not take any bread.”
And when Jesus realized this, he said, “O you of little trust, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you don’t have any bread?
Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the 5,000, and how many baskets you collected,
nor the seven loaves for the 4,000, and how many baskets you collected?
How do you not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread? But again I say, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
Then they understood that he was not telling them to beware of the leaven in bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; and others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
And Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-jonah, because flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not be strong enough to keep it imprisoned.
I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you forbid on earth must be already forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth must be already permitted in heaven.”
Then he ordered the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
From then on Jesus began to make known to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised from the dead.
And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “That can’t be, Lord! This will never, ever, happen to you.”
But he turned and said to Peter, “Get out of my way, Adversary! You are a hindrance to me because you are not thinking about God’s purposes, but about human interests.”
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, he must deny himself and must take up his cross and follow me.
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.
For what will it profit a person if he gains the whole world and yet forfeits his life? Or what will a person give in exchange for his life?
For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will absolutely not experience death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
