Luke 16

¹And he said also to the disciples, “There was a certain rich man who had a house manager, and it was reported to him that he was wasting his goods.

²And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give the account of your management, for you are no longer able to manage the house.’

³And the house manager said within himself, ‘What should I do, seeing that my lord is taking away the management from me? I have no strength to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.

⁴I know what I will do so that when I am removed from management, people will receive me into their houses.’

⁵And calling to him each one of his lord’s debtors, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe to my lord?’

⁶And he said, ‘100 measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write 50.’

⁷Then said he to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘100 measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and write 80.’

⁸“And his lord commended the unrighteous house manager because he had acted prudently. For the sons of this age are in their own generation more prudent than the sons of the light.

⁹“And I myself say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they will receive you into their tents in the age to come.

¹⁰“Whoever is faithful in very little is faithful also in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is unrighteous also in much.

¹¹So if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

¹²And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?

¹³“No servant is able to serve two masters, because he will either hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and think little of the other. You are not able to serve God and Wealth.”

¹⁴And the Pharisees, who were greedy for money, were listening to all these things, and they scoffed at him.

¹⁵And he said to them, “You are the ones who make yourselves righteous in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts. For that which is highly esteemed by people is an abomination in the sight of God.

¹⁶“The law and the prophets were until John. From that time the good news of the kingdom of God is being proclaimed, and everyone who enters forces his way into it.

¹⁷But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one ornamentation of the law to fall.

¹⁸“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery, and he who marries a woman who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.

¹⁹“Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, celebrating sumptuously every day.

²⁰And a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,

²¹and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Yes, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.

²²“And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom, and the rich man also died, and was buried.

²³And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and sees Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

²⁴And he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, so that he can dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’

²⁵But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things, but now here he is comforted and you are in anguish.

²⁶And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who would pass from here to you are not able, and none can cross over from there to us.’

²⁷And he said, ‘Then I ask you father, that you would send him to my father’s house

²⁸(for I have five brothers) so that he can warn them, so that they do not also come to this place of torment.’

²⁹But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them hear them.’

³⁰And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’

³¹And he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if one rises from among the dead.’”
