Genesis 16
Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not borne him any children. Now she had a female slave, an Egyptian whose name was Hagar.
So Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, Yahweh has prevented me from bearing. Go in to my slave. Perhaps I can build a family by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
So after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave, and gave her to Abram her husband as his wife.
He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became insignificant in her eyes.
Sarai said to Abram, “This abuse is because of you! I gave my slave into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I became insignificant in her eyes. May Yahweh judge between me and you.”
But Abram said to Sarai, “Look, your slave is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, so she ran away from her.
The angel of Yahweh found her by a spring of water in the desert; by the spring on the road to Shur.
He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s slave, where did you come from and where are you going?” So she said, “I am running away from my mistress Sarai.”
Then the angel of Yahweh said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit yourself to the harsh treatment under her hands.”
The angel of Yahweh said to her, “I will make your seed many, yes, many, so that they will not be able to be counted because of the multitude.”
The angel of Yahweh said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son, and you are to call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard and paid attention to your affliction.
He will be a wild donkey of a man. His hand will be against every man and every man’s hand will be against him. He will live nearby all of his brothers.”
She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees me.” For she said, “Here I have seen the one who sees me!”
Therefore the well was called, “Well of the Living One Who Sees Me.” Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
So Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
And Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
